My career

I´m studying veterinary since 2006 and the reason to choose this career is very simple, when I was little I had a neighbour who studied veterinary and I admire her so I started to ask her about what she did in the university and what was the career about. I also started to investigate about the working area and I realized that it has many alternatives, so it become in an interesting option to study. After my results in the PSU I was sure of what I wanted, but my parents (specially my father) believed that maybe I could do something better ( in economic terms, such as medicine), however I had already made my decision, so they couldn´t change my mind. Through the years they have noticed that this is what I like and want, so they are happy too.

Veterinary has many options to work once you have finished university, such as production(where you can find: bovine, ovine, piggs, etc), public health, clinic (for domestic animals, like dogs, cats, exotic ones, etc), investigation and so one. This areas can also be mixed to help society, for example when you talk about public health you must consider investigation and clinic konwledgement , because you must offer a complete solution (not only in epidemilogic aspects, but also prevention, control and treatment of diseases).

When I think about my needs in my professional future I realized that the university brings most of theoric tools, but practice must be done by myself, because it`s never enough, specially if there are 50 classmates trying to do the same with just a few animals and a few teachers in a reduced place. It`s also very important to count with contacts ( I mean people who is already working and can help me to find a job), and economical resources if you want to keep on studies (like a major or something like that).

I don`t have a favourite subject, I like the area of Public Health, but the subject is to general and theoric, I believe that to decide you need to know, not by someone telling you what is like, but by your own experience, so I`m looking for some practice ralted to this, so I`ll know if it`s definitely what I want to do in the future.

Dog Genius

This is a documentary based on different behaviors of dogs. The interesting part of it is that it relates that conducts with the human influence on dogs. All these behaviors are shown as a way of intelligence, which is similar to human thinking, and that seems to be the result of a coevolution of both.

The video shows many examples of dogs in different situations and the way they act, as the case of Mabel, who "predict" the moment when her owner was getting home ( my dog does the same, but not from that far). Ambula was another dog, used to demostrate the capacity to "understand" body signs, for example, the owner pointed an object and he goes straightly to it, she even follows the movement of the owner`s eyes to get an object. This was also studied in monkeys and they can not do this.

On the other hand we have dogs with incredible habilities, which are not really common, as Rico, which is a famous dog, who can recognize 200 different objects by hearing its names, but he can recognize new objects by exclusion too. This case was not a surprise to me, because it was presented in the last Behavior`s class (and it was this morning), we saw a few examples that were also presented in this documentary (as those named on the previous paragraph).

To conclude I have to mention my favourite one, Donnie. This was an artist dog, who was rescued from the street and lived in a dog`s shelter until a woman take her to live on her home. After a few months of adaptation to his new environment, she started to present an uncommon behavior: she ordered her toys by colours or types (by species: frogs with frogs and monkeys with monkeys)in geometrical forms. Her most amazing achievement was when she put two monkey toys as if they were hugging each other and this happened just a day after her owner did the same with her. For some people this was a way to show her feelings, but some others just think that she was playing.

In my opinion there is too much to study yet to define if dogs can show intelligence at the level of human beings, but I`m sure that they can expressed emotion states.

My favourite picture

This is probably one of the best pictures I have...It was taken the last day of classes in school and is very special because most of my best friends are in it. The photographer was contracted by the school to take the typical picture that you can buy and put in your room as a remember, but we have the option of a second one (the way we wanted), so we decided to change roles: the girls had to dress boys`s clothes and they had to use our clothes, there you see the result ( I think there are some of them that looks very natural on their new roles)...

It`s nice to see this picture and realize how the time has past and we still being friends, we organize parties or just meetings to see each other very often. Some of them are closer to me and I can count on them every time I need.

But the biggest reason to love this picture is that I found it really funny don`t you think so?

About a website

It`s very difficult to write about a specific website related to my carreer, because I really don`t have a favourite one.
I usually visit different websites depending on what`s my intention, for example, when I`m doing a homework for university I tend to use "revistas al día"(the link for this site is www.aldia.com) .This website provides a list of magazines classified first by subject and then alphabetically, so it`s easy to use.
One of my favourite magazines is Science Direct, because I find useful papers and reviews of new investigations, it`s always updated and also a faithful source of information.
I visit this website every time I need to get information about veterinary(specially for university), but I can find articles asociated to today`s news too, such as porcine fever.

My favourite piece of technology

I must confess that I can´t live without a computer(Maybe this is too much, but is quite truth). Computers are like maths, a universal lenguage, you can use them wherever you are, for whatever you need.

Computers bring a way to comunicate with people all around the world (as I do when I talk with my cousine in Australia by e-mails or chat), you can also keep in touch with classmates and teachers to complete assigments of University. You can meet new people, and find old friends.
Moreover, computers can replace other pieces of technology, such as TV, since you can download series, movies and documentales from internet, television is useless.You can also hear some music, read a book, write one, design a ppt presentation or a proyect. You can order your calendar, and publish your ideas. But most of these is posible because of internet wich is probably the best tool a computer can offer.

This amazing machine came to my life when I was a little girl, thanks to my brother (because I inherited it from him), I didn´t know how to use it, and I´m sure I don´t know much more now, but I loved the idea of having this great new toy to play. With time it became an important part of my rutine,I use it almost every day ( to check my e-mail account or do my homework). I´ve change it a few times, and I hope I can do it again ( as soon as I have the money).

As you see I really like this piece of technology, because it covers a lot of needs (comunication, information, entertainment, etc). And maybe my life can go on without it, but I´m sure it will be much difficult than now.
